Ryan Mathews injury: Chargers RB awaiting medical clearance after concussion

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Chargers may miss their starting running back on 'Monday Night Football' in Week 6.

The Chargers may be forced to use veteran running back Ronnie Brown in a featured role on Monday Night Football against the Colts. As of Thursday afternoon, starting running back Ryan Mathews had not been cleared from a concussion, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Mathews sustained the head injury in Week 5's loss to the Raiders. He was limited to three carries for eight yards and was forced to miss the rest of the game. He also missed practice on Thursday and is a question mark for the primetime game against Indianapolis.

If Mathews is unable to play on Monday night, Brown will handle the load for the Chargers. The nine-year veteran struggled in relief of Mathews in Week 5 but has had a mildly successful season so far. He has 21 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown this season and has also added 48 yards on six catches.

The Chargers will host the Colts on Monday Night Football in Week 6 at 8:40 p.m. ET on ESPN.
