Ian Rapoport reports that Ponder sat down twice this week with GM Rick Spielman and was told that he needed to fight for his job if he hoped to remain the team's starting quarterback.
The Vikings have reportedly been impressed with Freeman in practice, and plan to work him onto the field next week against the Giants. The Vikings signed Freeman last week after he was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he spent the first four full seasons of his career.
Ponder was Minnesota's first-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft and has had mixed results as the team's starter. In 30 appearances, he's 5,479 yards, 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. The Vikings finished 10-6 with him under center in 2012, but have started 1-3 this season.
