Eddie Royal injury: Chargers WR hurts toe on running play, returns to game

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers wide receiver is back after exiting with a toe injury.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal left Monday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts with an injured toe, but he returned in the second half.

Royal ran a 4-yard reverse in the second quarter before leaving the field with the injury. His return to the game is "questionable," according to NFL.com. There is no further update on his status at this time.

The injury leaves the Chargers without a key receiver and the team's top punt returner. Royal has caught 18 passes for 216 yards this season, but did not register a catch early in Monday's game. He was one of the early season league league leaders in touchdown receptions, hauling in five passes for TDs.

Rookie Keenan Allen will be leaned on more heavily in Royal's absence and the first-year player is responding well to the pressure on Monday night. He has caught five passes for 62 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown reception from Philip Rivers.

San Diego is having no problem moving the ball through the air against the Colts. Rivers has thrown for 106 yards in the first half, finding five different receivers.

UPDATE: Eddie Royal has re-entered the game in the third quarter.
