Pitta suffered the injury during training camp and was initially expected to miss the entire 2013 season. The Ravens placed him on injured reserve with the designation to return, leaving the door open for a possible late-season reappearance. At the time, Pitta said there was a chance he could play this season, but it was also possible for him to miss the entire year.
"I think there's a possibility of me coming back," Pitta said in September, via BaltimoreRavens.com. "There's also the possibility that I won't be back until next season. I'm prepared for both decisions. Right now, I'm taking it day-to-day and doing everything they allow me to do. I'm getting stronger every day."
The 27-year-old has been working out regularly and making steady progress. He stopped using crutches in early October and began catching passes not long after. Placed on injured reserve, Pitta is eligible to return in Week 9, although he likely won't return until later.
When Pitta returns, or if he does at all this season, could depend on how the Ravens perform over the next few weeks. Baltimore is 3-4 and two games behind Cincinnati in the AFC North. If the Ravens fall out of playoff contention over the next few weeks the team may decide to sit Pitta for the rest of the year instead of rushing him back.
