Following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' disastrous 31-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football, head coach Greg Schiano said that the he's not paying attention to the steadily mounting calls for his immediate firing. Perhaps he should be. In a week where "Fire Schiano" billboards began popping up around downtown Tampa and an NFL.com story quoted current players as saying he had lost the locker room, Schiano's primetime debacle against Carolina has him at the top of our unemployment notice list.
Welcome to the NFL head coach hot seat watch, where we talk about coaches who could soon be putting the words "former head coach" on their resume. There's a lot of bad teams in the league -- some were expected, and some were not. A good coach can survive on the goodwill of strong seasons in the past, but particularly poor seasons can undo that pretty easily.
Some of those coaches are on our watch already -- like Schiano, Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh and Tom Coughlin in New York. We've got a full list of the coaches on the hot seat thus far below:
Tom Coughlin (New York Giants), Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers), Rex Ryan (New York Jets), Jason Garrett (Dallas Cowboys), Jim Schwartz (Detroit Lions), Dennis Allen (Oakland Raiders), Mike Munchak (Tennessee Titans), Greg Schiano (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Leslie Frazier (Minnesota Vikings), and Ron Rivera (Carolina Panthers).
It's possible that more names could be added later, and even possible that some are taken off. However, it takes a bit longer to get up from the hot seat than it does to get in it, as noted in last week's edition.
After Week 7
Losers: Schiano, Schwartz, Munchak, Frazier
Schiano and the Buccaneers are clearly the worst team on this list. They were a mess with Josh Freeman, and they're a mess with Mike Glennon. They were never even in the game against Carolina as they fell to 0-7 on the season, and have now lost 12 of their last 13 dating back to 2012. Schwartz and the Lions have been impressive this year, but they failed to get their fifth win of the season, falling to the Cincinnati Bengals in a not-so-shameful loss.
Similarly, Munchak and the Titans fell to the San Francisco 49ers, who move to 5-2 on the season. San Francisco is a good team, and the Titans were working with an injured Jake Locker -- so the loss doesn't look that bad and the record. Finally, there's Frazier and the Vikings, who lost an ugly, ugly game to the Giants on Monday Night Football.
Victorious: Ryan, Garrett, Tomlin, Coughlin, Rivera
Ryan and the Jets had the most impressive win of the week, to be sure. They handed the New England Patriots their second loss of the season, winning 30-27 in overtime. Beating the Patriots is like winning the Super Bowl for the Jets, and definitely helps Ryan's chances when it's all said and done.
Garrett and the Cowboys managed to dominate the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles. They're 4-3, and if they can keep a hold of that division into the playoffs, then Garrett's job will be saved. Rivera and the Panthers continued to beat up on bad teams by dominating the St. Louis Rams to make it back to 3-3, while Tomlin and the Steelers ground out a solid win over the Baltimore Ravens for their second of the season.
Finally, Coughlin and his Giants earned their first win of the season. They're now 1-6, but it was only a win over the 1-4 Vikings, so it's not all that impressive. Furthermore, it was possibly the ugliest game any two teams have played this season.
Bye Week: Allen
Looking Ahead
The Buccaneers and Panthers already met on Thursday Night Football, so that's two teams out of the way. Rivera and the Panthers won, leaving Schiano's Bucs 0-7. Two other teams on this list, the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys, will play each other on Sunday. Both teams are 4-3 and are most impressive squads on our watch.
The Giants will try and earn their second win of the season when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles, an NFC East rival. Philadelphia hasn't been particularly good of late, so that should be interesting. Ryan and the Jets have a very tough matchup against the 5-2 Cincinnati Bengals. Allen and the Raiders return from a bye to take on Tomlin and the Steelers.
Lastly, Frazier faces a very tough divisional matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football. Josh Freeman will be making his second start, which could be interesting, but there's not a lot of optimism in a potential Minnesota win.
Bye Week: Munchak
