Both the Eagles and the Green Bay Packers had deals in place with the Chiefs at the trading deadline, according to Jay Glazer, who did an interview with WFAN radio. Gonzalez had signed off on the deals, which would have sent a third-round pick and a player to the Eagles. Gonzalez would get to pick his destination.
At the last minute, Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson decided to increase the asking price to a second-round pick, and the deal fell through. During the next offseason, the Chiefs were able to trade Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round pick.
Oh, what could have been, though. Gonzalez catching passes from Aaron Rodgers would have been a match made in heaven, and the Eagles certainly could have used a replacement for L.J. Smith. Who knows, Gonzalez may have even won a Super Bowl had one of those deals gone through.
Things worked out pretty well for Gonzalez in Atlanta, but it's interesting to think about the other possibilities.
