2018 Super Bowl finalists are Indianapolis, New Orleans and Minnesota

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The possible host sites for Super Bowl 52 have been narrowed down to three cities.

Super Bowl LII will be played in either Indianapolis, New Orleans or Minneapolis. The NFL selected those three cities as possible host sites with a final decision to be announced in May 2014.

Indianapolis and New Orleans were the host cities for the last two Super Bowls. Minneapolis hosted the Super Bowl in 1992 and will have a new stadium by 2018. Despite a power issue during last year's Super Bowl, New Orleans has a long history of hosting Super Bowls. The city has hosted 10 Super Bowls, tied with Miami for the most of any city. Indianapolis and Minneapolis have each hosted one Super Bowl.

Although two of the three possible hosts cities are in cold weather environments, weather won't be an issue. All three stadiums, including the new one in Minnesota, will also be enclosed.

Miami, Dallas and Tampa were the other three cities that submitted applications to host Super Bowl LII. The lack of a new stadium in Miami is a big reason the city wasn't considered. Miami last hosted a Super Bowl in 2010 and will have to wait until at least 2019 to get another host bid.
