Wes Welker undergoes concussion tests for Broncos

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Denver's slot receiver will go through a litany of steps before he is cleared to play.

Denver Broncos slot receiver Wes Welker sustained a concussion on Sunday night during his team's 27-17 win over the previously unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, Welker has to undergo a series of tests before he is cleared to return to the practice field, which can happen in full capacity no earlier than Friday. Until then, Welker can only practice on a limited basis. Head coach Jack Del Rio is waiting for the medical clearance before anything can move forward, per ESPN.com.

"First concern obviously is that he's ready to return when doctors give him the green light," Del Rio said. "When he's able to go, he'll go."

This weekend, the Broncos travel to face the New England Patriots, a team that Welker spent the previous six seasons of his career with. In that span, Welker went to a pair of Super Bowls but could not earn his first ring, losing both times to the New York Giants. In those years, Welker eclipsed the 100-reception mark five times.

With Welker's status for this Sunday in jeopardy, the Broncos will have to prepare a few different gameplans for Mr. Peyton Manning.
