Chargers vs. Chiefs 2013 results: San Diego pulls off 41-38 upset in Kansas City

The Chargers pulled off an incredible comeback to send the Chiefs to their second-straight loss, while San Diego climbs right back into the hard of the wild card race.

In a back-and-forth contest that featured eight lead changes, including two in the final 90 seconds, the San Diego Chargers upset the Kansas City Chiefs, 41-38, as Philip Rivers hit Seyi Ajirotutu for a game-winning touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in the game.

The Chiefs lost their second straight game and fall to 9-2 with their rematch against the Denver Broncos coming in Kansas City next Sunday. Down 34-31, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith hit Dwayne Bowe for a five-yard touchdown with 1:22 left to give Kansas City a lead, but they couldn't hold it as Rivers led the Chargers down the field for the eventual winner.

It likely did not help that the Chiefs were without Pro Bowl linebackers Tamba Hali (ankle) and Justin Houston (elbow) -- both defenders left the game in the first half and did not return.

The Chargers improve to 5-6 and find themselves in the middle of a crowded race for the second AFC wild card berth with five games to go.

Fantasy Studs and Duds

Rivers was incredible, throwing for 392 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Rookie Keenan Allen had 124 yards, while Danny Woodhead had two touchdowns of his own. Antonio Gates was held to 21 yards and no scores.

Smith had an impressive game, throwing for 281 yards and three touchdowns, while Jamaal Charles had 115 rushing yards and two scores.

Injury Report

Hali and Houston have combined for 20 sacks this season, the most by any teammates in the NFL. They will have to be evaluated this week and certainly the Chiefs will be praying that it's nothing serious.

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews left with a hamstring injury and did not return.

Chiefs free safety Kendrick Lewis left the game in the third quarter.

Did They Cover?

The Chiefs were 3.5-point favorites according to, so they obviously did not cover.
