Knowshon Moreno injury: Broncos RB hurt ankle in loss to Patriots

Stew Milne-USA TODAY Sports

The Broncos ability to run a balanced offense hinges on an MRI.

Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno injured his foot against the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football, and it could be more serious than previously thought. Moreno was seen on crutches following the game and is scheduled to undergo an MRI.

The fifth-year running back played the best game of his career against New England. Moreno ran for a total of 224 yards at an average of 6.1 per carry. He stood out on a night Peyton Manning struggled to throw the football effectively and had become one of the Broncos' most-reliable offensive weapons this season.

Moreno amassed a total of 1,166 all-purpose yards this season, and Denver's ability to run a balanced offense will hinge on the severity of his injury. The team lacks a reliable running back to take over, with rookie Montee Ball the most likely candidate. Ball has had mixed success this year, running well against the Patriots but also contibuting a costly fumble.
