Austin Collie released by Patriots

The Patriots cut ties with Austin Collie after just five games.

The New England Patriots have released wide receiver Austin Colliethe team announced Tuesday. Collie finds himself on the street for the third time this season.

The Patriots signed Collie in early October after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers. Still recovering from a major knee surgery, Collie appeared in only four games with the team, recording just three catches for 34 yards. Collie left last Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a minor knee injury. His release suggests that the Patriots may again try using Kenbrell Thompkins, who was a healthy scratch in Week 9.

A series of concussions and knee injuries have derailed Collie's once-promising career. He has played just five games in the past two seasons and found himself on three different teams in that same timespan. The fact that he couldn't catch on with the 49ers and Patriots, both teams struggling with injuries at wideout, indicates that he may not find another suitor this season.
