Houston Texans announce Wade Phillips as interim coach

Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

With Gary Kubiak recovering, Phillips will be steering the Texans' ship for the foreseeable future.

The Houston Texans have announced Wade Phillips will be the interim head coach while Gary Kubiak recovers from his transient ischemic attack, according to Doug Farrar.

There is no timetable for Kubiak's return. The Texans are 2-6 this season and will need quite a turnaround to make the playoffs for the third straight season.

Phillips is the most experienced coach on the Houston staff. The son of the recently deceased Bum Phillips, Wade has been the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys. Overall, Phillips has an 82-59 record in the regular season and a 1-5 postseason mark.

Phillips last coached the Cowboys, finishing his four-year tenure in 2010. In his time with Dallas, Phillips made the playoffs twice thanks to a pair of division titles. Phillips was fired in the middle of the 2010 season when the team got off to a 1-7 start.
