Houston Texans quarterback Case Keenum will sit Week 16 due to a torn ligament in his thumb, according to Deepi Sidhu of the team's official site. With Keenum out, Matt Schaub is expected to start this weekend against the Denver Broncos. Schaub took first-team reps with the offense in place of Keenum on Wednesday, per Sidhu.
With the Texans apparently committed to moving past a struggling Schaub as their starting quarterback, Keenum was announced as Houston's starter for the rest of the regular season earlier this month. Keenum has had his own issues, however. This past Sunday, he completed just 18-of-34 passes for 168 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions during a loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Last we saw of Schaub, he played reasonably well on two consecutive scoring drives after replacing Keenum during the Texans' Week 14 Thursday night loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He led Houston out of a 14-point deficit to pull within four points late in regulation, but an interception thrown just before the 2-minute warning ultimately sealed yet another loss for the team.
At 2-12 on the season, the Texans currently own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Houston is expected to target Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater if it retains the pick, according to SB Nation's latest mock draft.
