Robert Woods says lesson learned after ejection from Bills-Dolphins game

The rookie receiver acknowledged his punch at Reshad Jones was a mistake, but said he was simply trying to stand up for himself.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Robert Woods said he's learned his lesson after being ejected from a game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday for throwing a punch at an opponent, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com.

"Of course you shouldn't throw a punch in a football game, but if you're playing outside the rules, sometimes you got to be a man sometimes," Woods said. "But I learned my lesson and just can't do it again."

Woods threw an uppercut at the helmeted head of Dolphins safety Reshad Jones after the two became entangled at the end of a running play. The rookie receiver was immediately ejected from the game and made matters worse by getting into a verbal confrontation with an official on his way off the field.

While Woods noted his actions crossed the line, he insisted Jones had it coming.

"The play was over. It was just one of those things where it was just extra, how he felt it was necessary to push me after the play and throw me over the pile," Woods said. "They were clapping once I was walking off the field, but we still won at the end of the game."

The Bills won, 19-0.

It's not the first time the two have gone after it this season. Woods said he had a dustup with Jones in the two teams' first matchup back in Week 7.

Actually didn't know who it was. Earlier in the game I was talking to [No.] 28, [cornerback Nolan] Carroll, saying 'good game, good plays' and stuff like that. Same thing with [cornerback Brent] Grimes. I don't know where [Jones'] actions came from, but actually [No.] 20, he cheapshoted me last time we played as well, but I didn't know it was him. It was just one of those things where I guess that's how he plays.

Woods has 39 receptions for 560 yards and three touchdowns this season.
