Texans will start Case Keenum for rest of season

Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sport

The Texans will give Case Keenum three more weeks to prove he can be an NFL starter. How he performs could determine whether the Texans take Teddy Bridgewater in April if they earn the No. 1 overall pick.

The Houston Texans are sticking by Case Keenum. Texans owner Bob McNair gave Keenum a vote of confidence during Friday's press conference to announce Gary Kubiak's firing.

Keenum was pulled in favor of Matt Schaub during the third quarter of Texans' loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night, and Schaub was able to lead the offense to 10 straight point to pull the Texans within one score of a win. Despite Schaub's success, however, McNair reiterated that Keenum will be the team's starting quarterback over the final three weeks of the season before being reevaluated.

"Case is going to be the quarterback and we're going to give him a chance," McNair said. "He's shown flashes of brilliance and also rookie mistakes."

Keenum may have to be brilliant over the Texans' remaining games if he hopes to win the starting job next season. The Texans are on track to earn the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and could have their pick of an impressive quarterback litter featuring Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater, Fresno State's Derek Carr and LSU's Zach Mettenberger.

Keenum is completing just 54.3 percent of his passes through seven appearances this season. He has 1,592 yards at a respectable 7.27 yards per attempt, but his production hasn't translated into wins. Keenum has thrown nine touchdowns to four interceptions.
