Adrian Peterson injury: Vikings RB done for the day with mid-foot sprain

The Vikings are without their offensive cornerstone for the rest of the game.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson left Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens with a possible ankle injury. Peterson had to be carried off the field and has been ruled out for the game.

Update: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Peterson has a mid-foot sprain. He's back on the sideline but will not come back in.

Peterson suffered the injury running out of bounds after a catch. As he lunged for the first down, he went down writhing around in pain. The trainers helped up up and off the field. He walked around trying to test the ankle, but was in major pain and shortly went into the locker room. The Vikings are officially calling his status questionable to return, but he was later ruled out. Toby Gerhart will fill in for Peterson's place.

Before the injury, Peterson had 13 yards on seven carries, struggling to get things going in heavy snow conditions. He leads the NFL with 1,208 rushing yards and is the most important player on Minnesota's offense. His loss would be devastating to the Vikings, who are already out of the playoff race and don't have many other credible weapons on offense.

Peterson's status will be updated when more information is available.
