Robert Griffin III replaced by Kirk Cousins in blowout

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Down 35 points at home, the Redskins have made the switch to Cousins to avoid unnecessary injury to their starter.

If you're going to see Kirk Cousins come into the game in place of Robert Griffin III, at least be happy that he's being pulled to avoid injury rather than because of one. Even if it is because the Redskins are losing by a ton.

Down 45-10 to the Kansas City Chiefs at home, head coach Mike Shanahan has pulled his starter and replaced him with Cousins in the fourth quarter. Playing in the snow in front of a crowd that has dwindled down to only the die-hard fans, Washington doesn't want to take any chances with the player they've invested so much in already. Sacked five times already, Griffin won't be put in harm's way for the rest of Sunday.

Griffin is 12-of-26 for 164 yards, one touchdown, one interception and one fumble. He also rushed four times for 29 yards.

The Redskins have struggled this season and are a virtual lock to fall to 4-9 on the year. Griffin has clearly not played the same as he did when he won Rookie of the Year honors in 2012, coming back from an ACL injury in the playoffs against the Seattle Seahawks. Washington doesn't want to see a repeat of that, so that's why Cousins is now in the game to close out this game and start to regroup for Week 15.
