NFL suspends Javarris James for 4 games

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

The NFL suspended Arizona Cardinals running back Javarris James for four games for a substance abuse violation.

Arizona Cardinals running back Javarris James was suspended for four games by the NFL on Wednesday for a violation of the league's policy on substance abuse, according to a report from NFL.com.

James spent the 2012 season with Arizona on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury during the preseason. He hasn't played in a regular season game since 2010. If he is able to make a roster next season, he would be suspended for the first four games of the season.

After scoring six touchdowns as a rookie with the Indianapolis Colts in 2010, James has bounced around the league with stops in New England and Washington. James was a longshot to make Arizona's roster out of training camp and the four-game suspension will make it even more of a challenge to make a NFL roster next season.

James was arrested for marijuana possession in June of 2011 while he was still a member of the Colts. He was charged with misdemeanor possession. He was released by Indianapolis shortly after the arrest.
