Despite being ranked as a top 25 safety by Pro Football Focus in 2011, Abdullah sat out the 2012 season to fulfill religious obligations. Abdullah, along with his brothers, made a pilgrimage to Mecca during the 2012 season, helping fulfill their beliefs as Muslims.

Abdullah declined a contract extension from the Vikings, but the safety did not want to draw attention to himself, and declined Minnesota's offer.
In 2011, Abdullah appeared in nine games for Minnesota, recording 49 tackles, recording one sack and intercepting one pass.
Abdullah will turn 28 in July, and will be given a chance to compete for a starting spot in Kansas City's secondary, opposite Eric Berry.
After being concussed four times between 2010 and 2011, Abdullah contemplated retiring from the NFL, but instead opted to take a year off to fulfill religious obligations.
