Super Bowl score: Akers adds another field goal as 49ers go into half down 21-6

The 49ers drove down and got a field goal on the final drive of the first half, but they still trail 21-6.

Credit to the San Francisco 49ers, they are trying. They may be playing horribly, but they are trying and their effort was rewarded with a David Akers field goal on the last drive of the first half that cut the Baltimore Ravens' lead to 21-6.

The Ravens have come out and just blasted the 49ers from the very start. It helps that San Francisco doesn't appear as if they know how to play football, committing penalties, fumbling, throwing interceptions and blowing coverages seemingly at will.

So when things are going that poorly, what do you do? Keep slinging it!

The 49ers took over at their own 20-yard line with 1:45 to go in the first half and could have just run the clock out, gone into halftime and called it a day, but they didn't. They threw the ball around, putting trust in the rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and were rewarded.

First, Kaepernick found Michael Crabtree for six yards, then he spotted Delanie Walker for 14 more yards. Add in a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty on Haloti Ngata and San Francisco was down to the Baltimore 45-yard line. After an incomplete pass, Kapernick hooked up with Walker again, this time for 28 yards. Vernon Davis then got in on the action with an eight-yard reception, but once again the 49ers' drive stalled inside the Raven's 10 and they had to settle for a field goal.

It wasn't what the 49ers wanted -- they really needed a touchdown -- but a lot of coaches would have taken nothing and gone into halftime. San Francisco tried and got three, so that's something.
