After the Ravens and the 49ers finished the first quarter of Super Bowl XLVII with Baltimore holding on to a 7-3 lead, the Niners immediately received the ball after Baltimore was stopped on a third-and-long on the last play of the first quarter. The Niners wasted no time moving the ball down the field, but the drive was stopped short when rookie running back LaMichael James fumbled the ball in Ravens territory. The fumble was caused by linebacker Courtney Upshaw and recovered by Arthur Jones.
The Ravens, getting the ball back near their own 20-yard line, proceeded to drive down the field, using the pass more often than the run, hoping to take advantage of their talented wide receivers. However, the Ravens offense still relied heavily on their running backs to pick up first downs in short-yardage situations. The Ravens continued to drive down the field and eventually, while just a few yards from the end zone, Flacco found tight end Dennis Pitta for his second touchdown pass of the game. With that, the Ravens took a 14-3 lead at the 7:15 mark in the second quarter.
The 49ers didn't help their chances on their next drive. On the first play of the drive, Colin Kaepernick dropped back to pass and fired a ball down the field to Randy Moss, but the ball floated over Moss' head and was picked off by safety Ed Reed, his ninth postseason interception of his career. After a short scuffle between the teams, the Ravens took over at their own 44-yard line.
The Ravens drove down the field, but were stopped just as they reached the red zone. They set up for the field goal, but in a surprise play, the snap was direct to rookie kicker Justin Tucker, who proceeded to run towards the first-down marker nine yards away. He was knocked out of bounds just a yard short, though, by Darcel McBath. The Ravens turned the ball over on downs and the Niners took over on their own six-yard line with just over three minutes left in the half.
The 49ers were unable to do anything with their next possession, though. After a run for no gain and a near-interception, they ran a delayed hand off on third down, which was stopped short of the first down. The Niners were forced to punt, giving great field position to the Ravens once again, with just enough time to finish the half with a score.
The Ravens were stopped on first and second down, but a 56-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones, in which Jones was so wide open he fell down as he caught the ball and was able to get up and run the ball into the end zone, on third-and-10 gave Baltimore a 21-3 lead with 1:45 left in the game.
Kaepernick and the Niners offense came alive with barely any time left in the half as the Niners quarterback moved the ball down the length of the field again, thanks to a long pass to Davis. With 21 seconds left in the first half, they were on the Ravens' nine-yard line. Kaepernick was sacked at the line of scrimmage though on third down, setting the Niners up for a field goal. Kicker David Akers put his second field goal through the uprights, narrowing the Ravens' lead by three points.
The Ravens and Niners went into the locker room at halftime with the Ravens leading by a score of 21-6.
The major difference in the first half has been the play of the quarterbacks. While Flacco has completed 13 of 20 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns, Kaepernick has thrown an interception, no touchdowns and has only 139 yards passing in the first half.
The Ravens will receive the ball first in the second half.
