Don't expect Felix Jones to be in a Dallas Cowboys uniform in 2013, according to Nick Eatman of the team's official site. Jones will be an unrestricted free agent when the 2013 NFL Free Agency period begins in march. He has gradually seen a diminished role with the team since being drafted in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Blogging The Boys: Dallas could target a RB in 2013 NFL Draft
Jones appeared in 16 games last season, but amassed his lowest rushing total since his rookie year, when he only appeared in six games due to a hamstring injury. He averaged a career-low 3.6 yards per carry, albeit behind a struggling Cowboys offensive line. The Dallas running game averaged just 79.1 yards rushing per game, which was better than only the Arizona Cardinals last season.
Jones was also used less often as kick returner, diminishing his value as a specialist. The Cowboys will have DeMarco Murray, Phillip Tanner and Lance Dunbar under contract next season. With a loaded backfield, it may not make sense for the Cowboys to try to retain Jones, especially if he isn't going to provide value in other areas.
Jones' athleticism should help him land with another NFL Franchise in due time. He can still be a solid No. 2 on the right roster, and could thrive behind better blocking.
