Tony Gonzalez will return to Falcons for 2013 season

Tight end Tony Gonzalez has decided not to retire and will return to the Atlanta Falcons for the 2013 season.

The Atlanta Falcons will be treated to one more year of Tony Gonzalez. The future Hall of Famer will return for the 2013 season and is on the verge of agreeing to a new contract with the Falcons according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

Gonzalez had previously said that he would retire following the 2012 season, but started to have second thoughts after the Falcons narrowly lost the NFC Championship to the San Francisco 49ers. Gonzalez told Glazer:

After discussing it with my family and really, truly struggling with this decision, I informed the Falcons that I would like to return for one more shot. Considering how this season ended, I wanted to give it another run with Matt (Ryan), Smitty (head coach Mike Smith) and the guys we have in there.

The 13-time Pro Bowler and all-time greatest receiving tight end is far from washed up. Last season he caught 93 passes for 930 yards and 8 touchdowns while earning his 10th All-Pro selection and notching his first ever playoff win.

Despite his high level of play, Gonzalez seemed intent on hanging up his cleats for a time, looking forward to spending time with his family and having already received offers from three different TV networks. Ultimately the allure of another shot at the Super Bowl won out.

"I am coming back for one reason and one reason only, the chance to win a Super Bowl," Gonzalez said.
