Chiefs sign Chase Daniel, according to report

Derick E. Hingle-US PRESSWIRE

NFL teams can never have enough quarterback depth and the Chiefs added a solid backup on Tuesday, agreeing to a deal with Chase Daniel.

On the same day the Chiefs officially acquired quarterback Alex Smith, Kansas City also added Smith's backup, agreeing to a deal with free agent Chase Daniel, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Daniel doesn't have much regular season experience, but spent four seasons in New Orleans learning under Drew Brees and Sean Payton. Daniel also has some local ties, as he starred in college for the Missouri Tigers. According to the report, Daniel and the Chiefs agreed to a three-year deal.

The 26-year-old Daniel went undrafted in the 2009 draft and was released by the Washington Redskins before sticking with the Saints. Daniel appeared in 45 games for the Saints, serving as the holder on special teams. He's attempted nine regular season passes in his career.

In Kansas City, Daniel is expected to back up Smith, who was officially acquired in a trade with the 49ers on Tuesday. The Chiefs will have an overhauled quarterback depth chart next season, with Smith and Daniel replacing Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn atop the depth chart.
