Titans rumors: Shonn Greene to visit Wednesday

Jim McIsaac

Greene finished with more than 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons, but would be a backup in Tennessee.

After two years in a starting role with the New York Jets, free agent running back Shonn Greene has a visit scheduled with the Tennessee Titans, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, where he'd presumably be the backup to three-time Pro Bowler Chris Johnson, if signed.

The Jets, a team with plenty of salary cap problems of their own don't seem particularly concerned about the idea of Greene leaving and have already made plans to replace him with former-Oakland Raiders running back Mike Goodson, according to a report.

A third round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, Greene was an effective, change-of-pace back in his first two seasons before taking over as the full-time starter in 2011. While he didn't put up gaudy numbers, he finished with over 1,000 yards rushing in each of the last two seasons and 14 combined touchdowns.

For the Titans, Johnson hasn't yet found the groove that he rode to a 2,000-yard rushing season in 2009, although he managed to finish with more than 1,000 yards in each of the next three seasons as well. Absent for most of Johnson's career has been a complimentary back, as Javon Ringer hasn't proven to be capable in the role and Jamie Harper has averaged 2.1 yards per carry in the NFL.

With Greene, the Titans would be acquiring the same type of plodding, straight-line running back that they attempted to use as a compliment to Johnson, but one that has proven himself as a productive and consistent back.
