Geoff Schwartz announces that he has joined the Chiefs

USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs picked up a player who can be useful at either the guard or tackle spots, although it's not a move expected to factor in as they turn to their offensive line in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Geoff Schwartz, the offensive lineman announced via Twitter.

Schwartz is in his fifth year out of Oregon, and was drafted in the seventh round by the Carolina Panthers in 2008. He eventually worked into a major role for the Panthers, starting every game at right tackle for Carolina in 2010, but a hip injury kept him from playing in the 2011 season. He played in 13 games for the Minnesota Vikings this past year, but didn't start.

Arrowhead Pride wrote that they expect Schwartz to factor in at either the right guard or right tackle spot, likely competing for a starting gig at the tackle position now left vacant by the release of Eric Winston. The deal is for one season.

Although the signing comes at a position the Chiefs are expected to consider with their first overall pick in the upcoming draft, don't expect it to factor in whatsoever. If they want Luke Joeckel with their pick, they'll take him regardless of Schwartz. Although Schwartz is talented and could possibly compete for a starting spot, he's not a major player for the future of the franchise.
