Captain Munnerlyn says he's staying with Panthers

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

After drawing interest from Chicago, Captain Munnerlyn agreed to a deal to re-sign with the Panthers.

Free agent defensive back Captain Munnerlyn will re-sign with the Carolina Panthers despite a contract offer from the Chicago Bears. Munnerlyn announced the move on his Twitter account.

Details of Munnerlyn's contract are still unknown, but Chicago reportedly offered the 24-year-old cornerback a one-year contract. Playing mostly in a nickel role, Munnerlyn started 11 games last season, finishing with nine pass deflections and two interceptions. He's also had some success as a punt returner, averaging 9.0 yards per return during his career.

Munnerlyn may return to a bigger role in Carolina as the Panthers released starting cornerback Chris Gamble earlier this offseason. Munnerlyn spent the first four years of his career with Carolina after being selected in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Panthers.

In addition to the Bears and Panthers, the Cleveland Browns were also reported to be interested in Munnerlyn.
