Chris Owens agrees to deal with Browns, according to report

The Browns had been rumored to be interested in Brent Grimes, but they opted to sign another Falcons cornerback, signing Chris Owens, a fourth-year player whose role was increased in when Grimes tore his Achilles tendon.

The Cleveland Browns have reportedly made their second free agent pickup of Friday - and made an interesting decision for the Atlanta Falcons easier - by signing cornerback Chris Owens, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Both Brent Grimes and Owens, who filled in for Grimes after he tore his Achilles tendon in the first game of the season, were free agents in Atlanta's backfield. Grimes is the more valuable - the Falcons had given him the franchise tag in 2012 - and both were options to be kept or sign elsewhere. Grimes had taken a look at going to Cleveland, but it appears the Browns have opted for Owens, who had four pass deflections but has not recorded an interception since the 2010 season.

The details of Owens' contract are unknown, but he received $565,000 in 2012 and didn't play impressively enough to earn a major pay raise. He's spent all four years of his career with Atlanta. His departure makes Grimes' return to Atlanta more likely, although he's still rumored to be looking at teams such as Miami and Tampa Bay.

Earlier Friday, the Browns had signed tight end Kellen Davis.
