NFL free agent tracker: Mike Patterson will visit Giants on Tuesday

Eric Hartline-US PRESSWIRE

Defensive tackle Mike Patterson is set to visit the New York Giants on Tuesday.

The New York Giants will host defensive tackle Mike Patterson on Tuesday, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. Patterson will be the second ex-Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman to visit the team this offseason.

The first was Cullen Jenkins, who didn't leave New York without a three-year, $8 million contract. Patterson, 29, isn't quite as high profile, but obviously the Giants are serious about upgrading their defensive line. In the report, it's noted that the team plans to give him a physical.

This is significant due to the seizure that Patterson suffered in 2011 during training camp. He hasn't missed too much time due to his injuries, playing 15 games after the seizure that season. He did miss multiple games the next season, after surgery was required to remove an arterjovenous malformation from his brain.

Patterson would be great depth for the Giants, but he likely wouldn't be a starter. Guys like Linval Joseph, Marin Austin and Jenkins would be ahead of him in the rotation. But if the Giants can get him for the right price, it's hard to argue with him being a backup or supplemental piece.

He played in 99 games for the Eagles over the course of eight seasons, and was released primarily due to salary cap constraints. He had 16.5 sacks over the course of his career with Philadelphia.
