SI's Peter King reported in his Monday Morning Quarterback column that the Cardinals would not be giving any guaranteed money to Mathieu, instead structuring his contract in the form of roster bonuses and the minimum base salaries. Agent Pat Rowlar told Rapoport that the report is "ridiculous" and says that he never even talked to the team. He went on to say that he anticipates the Cardinals protecting themselves, but will not do a deal without guaranteed money. Mathieu has already agreed to do weekly drug tests with the team.
Mathieu was selected by the Cardinals with the 69th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. The talented-but-troubled defensive back has probably landed in the best possible spot, playing alongside his offseason mentor Patrick Peterson. Head coach Bruce Arians has confirmed that he will be playing at free safety in 2013.
