NFL releases statement on Aaron Hernandez

The NFL released a statement explaining that any team that wants to sign Aaron Hernandez will have to hold a hearing in front of commissioner Roger Goodell.

The NFL released a statement Thursday in response to the Aaron Hernandez situation. The former New England Patriots tight end cleared waivers on Thursday after being released by the team a day earlier. As the statement explains, if a team wished to extend an offer to Hernandez, the contract would first need to be approved by league commissioner Roger Goodell.

NFL clubs were advised today that if Aaron Hernandez enters into a player contract prior to the resolution of the charges pending against him, the contract will not be approved or take effect until Commissioner Roger Goodell holds a hearing. The purpose of the hearing would be to determine whether Hernandez should be suspended or face other action prior to the charges being resolved.

Hernandez has been arrested on a charge of first degree murder, as well as five gun-related charges, after the body of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was found near Hernandez's house last week. Earlier Thursday, reports revealed that police are also investigating Hernandez in connection to a double-murder that took place in Boston last summer.
