Dwight Freeney ready 'to put some hits' on Peyton Manning

Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

After never getting a chance to hit his old Colts teammate, Freeney is excited the "five-yard halo" is finally gone.

When they were teammates with the Indianapolis Colts, Dwight Freeney didn't get to come near Peyton Manning on the practice field. Now, after Freeney joined the San Diego Chargers this offseason, he'll have two games a season to get after the Denver Broncos quarterback. It sounds like he's ready to take advantage of the opportunity.

In a video interview posted on the Chargers' official website, Freeney, along with discussing his goals and fresh start in San Diego, had this to say about his new AFC West division rival:

"Playing with Peyton for 10 years, him sitting back in practice, he has that five-yard halo, you can't get within 5 yards of Peyton or they're screaming at you, 'saying oh, get away from our quarterback.' So it's finally going to be a great opportunity for me coming up soon to put some hits on him. Might talk a little bit, too."

Freeney will play outside linebacker in San Diego after a season of learning and playing the position with the Colts in 2012. He registered five sacks and a forced fumble in 14 games last season.

The Chargers and Broncos first meet in Week 10 on Sunday, Nov. 10. San Diego hosts the initial meeting and will travel to Denver in Week 15 for a primetime showdown on Thursday night, Dec. 12, on NFL Network.
