NFL news roundup: Matthew Stafford extension, Tom Heckert's arrest

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions came to terms on a contract extension, and Tom Heckert was arrested for DUI. Read on for more you may have missed on Tuesday.

The Detroit Lions and Matthew Stafford reportedly agreed to a big contract extension on Tuesday. The deal is a three-year extension that will be worth $53 million, with a signing bonus of $27.5 million. The deal will keep Stafford with the team through the 2017 season.

Here's what else you might have missed from Tuesday:

Heckert arrested for DUI

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Tom Heckert, Denver Broncos director of pro personnel, is facing a DUI charge after being arrested on June 11. This report came just three days after another Broncos executive was arrested for an alleged DUI. The Broncos and Heckert also released statements following the news on Tuesday. Not a good look for Denver.

Gronkowski making progress

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is making progress in his return from back surgery. Gronkowski is reportedly progressing on schedule, though it's still unclear whether he'll be able to go in Week 1 on Sept. 8. With the departures of Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd and Aaron Hernandez, any positive news regarding Gronkowski and his health is great for the Patriots.

Johnson, Cincinnati not close on deal

Michael Johnson appears set to play the 2013 season on the franchise tag. With the Cincinnati Bengals having to worry about future expiring contracts of Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins, it seems unlikely they'll dedicate the money needed to secure Johnson long-term prior to the July 15 deadline. Johnson is one of the better pass rushers in the NFL and is likely expecting a big contract.

More on Hernandez

Details from search warrants executed on Aaron Hernandez's house were revealed on Tuesday. Among the information included was the report that Hernandez was hostile and uncooperative when initially contacted by the police. There's plenty more, so check out the link above.
