Ed Reed injury: Texans DB uncertain of return date

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Ed Reed is still dealing with scar tissue from his offseason hip surgery. He hopes to play in Week 1, but isn't ready to give a return date yet.

Houston Texans safety Ed Reed spoke to reporters for the first time in training camp, but he doesn't have much new information to offer about his hip injury. Teammate Andre Johnson believes that Reed will be ready to play in Week 1, although Reed seems less sure about his chances.

The Texans placed Reed on the active/PUP list due to his offseason surgery on his hip. He is still dealing with scar tissue and hasn't been able to run at 100 percent. Reed is unable to practice until cleared by medical personnel.

Houston signed Reed to a three-year, $15 million deal after he recorded 58 tackles, four interceptions and 15 passes defended with the Ravens last season.

If Reed isn't ready for Week 1, rookie D.J. Swearinger may get the nod at free safety alongside Danieal Manning.
