Washington's Phillip Thomas out for the year

USA TODAY Sports

The Redskins lose a bit of depth at free safety as a result of the injury.

Washington Redskins rookie safety Phillip Thomas will miss the 2013 season due to a Lisfranc injury, according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post.

Head coach Mike Shanahan announced the injury during a press conference on Tuesday and said Thomas is expected to miss 4-5 months. He'll have surgery to repair the injury and be placed on injured reserve. Washington selected Thomas in the fourth round of the draft after he earned All-American honors during his career at Fresno State. He was listed as the third-string free safety on the depth chart behind Brandon Meriweather and Reed Doughty.

Thomas suffered the injury during Washington's preseason opener. An X-ray showed no broken bones and Thomas was initially considered day-to-day before a second opinion revealed a torn Lisfranc ligament in his foot. This isn't the first major injury of Thomas' career, as he broke his leg and injured his ankle in 2011.

While he won't see any action as a rookie, Thomas should be recovered in time to full participate in offseason workouts.
