The Raiders traded away Carson Palmer and traded for Matt Flynn in the offseason, but the man who was usurped by Russell Wilson in last year's training camp is once again trying to prove he deserves a starting spot against some youngsters. Terrelle Pryor is the most obvious next man up, but the one-time Ohio State star didn't impress in the team's first preseason game, going 6-of-10 with a pick.
Meanwhile, Matt McGloin, who seemed like a fourth-stringer to almost everybody, led Oakland on a touchdown drive when he was in the game, tossing a 30-yard score to Brice Butler. Now, McGloin is a third-stringer -- kind of like Wilson was at the beginning of last year's training camp. Silver and Black Pride wrote that Flynn seemed to be cementing his hold on the position, but their top two things to watch for in the Saints game revolved around the QB battle.
The Saints are still looking to get into a flow under Payton, hoping to regain the stride that had them 13-3 under the coach in 2011, as opposed to the 7-9 season they had under Aaron Kromer and Joe Vitt while Payton was suspended. They won their first preseason game, but it was on the strength of a great performance by backup Luke McCown, who had 216 yards passing and two touchdowns in a 17-13 win.
