Mario Manningham injury: 49ers WR will start season on PUP list

Manningham is still a long ways away from returning from a torn ACL.

Jim Harbaugh provided an update on Mario Manningham Sunday, confirming that the injured San Francisco 49ers wideout would begin the 2013 regular season on the physically unable to perform list.

Manningham has been recovering from an ACL and PCL tear in his knee suffered in Week 16 last season, and has been on the active PUP list since the beginning of training camp. Under PUP rules, Manningham will be held out of the team's practices and games through Week 6, and will not count towards the team's 53-man roster. At the end of the sixth week, the team faces a three-week window in which it must either release him, re-activate him or place him on injured reserve.

The announcement continues the trend of bad news the 49ers' receiving corps has dealt with all summer. Michael Crabtree is rehabbing from a torn Achilles he suffered in May and is expected to miss the majority, if not all, of the 2013 season. Receivers A.J. Jenkins, Kassim Osgood and Kyle Williams have all dealt with various injuries during camp.

Manningham arrived in San Francisco in 2012 fresh off his legendary grab during the New York Giants' Super Bowl XLVI victory. He played in 12 games for the Niners last season, grabbing 42 receptions for 449 yards and one touchdown.
