Coby Fleener injury: Colts TE scheduled for MRI on knee

Indianapolis' second year tight end is hoping his knee injury isn't serious.

Indianapolis Colts tight end Coby Fleener injured his knee on Sunday night in a 20-12 win over the New York Giants in MetLife Stadium, and now needs an MRI on Monday, according to Pro Football Talk.

Fleener was hurt earlier in the preseason with a concussion, so the injury bug has really taken a liking to the Colts' second round pick of 2012 out of Stanford University. Coach Chuck Pagano said after the game that he didn't think Fleener's knee was of great concern, per PFT.

"Doesn’t look to be too serious, but we’ll get an MRI tomorrow," Pagano told reporters.

Fleener has really struggled thus far in the preseason, failing to live up to expectations. Against the Buffalo Bills in the preseason opener, Fleener had a fumble. On Sunday, Fleener had another rough game with a drop, followed by a Matt Hasselbeck pass hitting him in the back due to a lack of focus.

As Josh Wilson points out at Stampede Blue, Fleener has looked good in camp but fallen apart when the lights are brightest.

Yeah, he really needs to step it up BIG TIME.  He has been a real disappointment so far this preseason.  He had such a good camp and has so much talent, but for whatever reason it hasn't translated to the field yet this preseason.

Coming out of college, Fleener was supposed to be the Colts' starting tight end, replacing Dallas Clark as the man who would be Andrew Luck's security blanket for the next 10 years. Considering Luck and Fleener played at Stanford together, it seemed a no-brainer. Instead, it has been fellow second-year tight end Dwayne Allen who has stepped into that role.

Last year, Allen recorded 45 catches for 521 yards and three touchdowns against Fleener's line of 26 receptions for 281 yards and a pair of scores. Allen is currently sitting out with an injured foot, but should be ready in time for the regular season opener on Sept. 8.
