Jason Smith released by New Orleans Saints

Four years after being the second overall pick, Smith is again searching for a new home. The Saints were his third team in the last year.

The New Orleans Saints have released tackle Jason Smith, continuing the ongoing saga of one of the most notable NFL Draft busts.

New Orleans signed Smith in April of this year after losing Jermon Bushrod to the Bears in free agency, but he didn't make it to the third preseason game and becomes available for any team to sign.

The Rams drafted Smith out of Baylor with the second overall pick in the 2009 draft. Despite some scouts questioning his run-blocking ability, St. Louis was desperate to find a franchise replacement for All-Pro Orlando Pace. Smith turned out to be not even close to that player.

He was relegated to right tackle as a rookie, rather than the more highly-coveted left tackle position, and then beaten out for left tackle again by rookie Rodger Saffold in 2010. The Rams traded Smith to the Jets in 2012, but he played just two games with New York before being released in February and then picked up by the Saints.

Though he has been a major disappointment in his career, perhaps the Rams can take some solace in some of the other top picks in '09. The players taken right after Smith were Tyson Jackson (Chiefs), Aaron Curry (Seahawks), Mark Sanchez (Jets), Andre Smith (Bengals) and Darrius Heyward-Bey (Raiders.) They could have done better, but not much better.

Now if they want him back for any reason, he's available.
