The New York Jets are still noncommittal on their starting quarterback in Thursday's preseason finale. Coach Rex Ryan won't name his starter until gameday, reports Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Mark Sanchez is the presumed regular season starter, but he suffered a bruised shoulder in last week's game and is considered day-to-day. He is unlikely to play in Thursday's game, though the team is hopeful he will be ready for Week 1. Rookie Geno Smith is the most likely candidate to start Thursday despite his major struggles in the third preseason game. Matt Simms and Greg McElroy are the other quarterbacks on the roster, and could end up seeing significant time before final roster cuts are due on Saturday.
Ryan and the Jets have once again been in the news for all the wrong reasons this week. The team is facing criticism for the way it's handling the quarterback situation, and Ryan has been relatively mum since his postgame meltdown on Saturday night. We probably won't know who will be starting Thursday until the first offensive snap of the game.
