Panthers release Jimmy Clausen, Drayton Florence, per report

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Clausen hasn't taken a snap since 2010.

The Carolina Panthers cut quarterback Jimmy Clausen and cornerback Drayton Florence,'s Ian Rapoport reported Saturday morning in a series of tweets (here and here).

The Panthers drafted Clausen in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. He was a highly regarded college prospect, and quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow were the only two in his class selected above him. He started 10 games as a rookie for Carolina, completing 157-of-299 passes for 1,558 yards, three touchdowns and nine interceptions. He has not attempted a pass since then. His career quarterback rating is 58.4.

Florence is a nine-year veteran who signed with the Panthers in the offseason after spending last year with the Detroit Lions. In a career with the Chargers (who drafted him in 2003), Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills and Lions, the 32-year-old cornerback has 460 tackles and 18 interceptions.
