The 2013 NFL preseason begins in earnest Thursday night, with six games on tap for football-starved fans. The matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Diego Chargers will be the last of the night, and will go well past midnight on the east coast.
The Seahawks, led by quarterback Russell Wilson, are hoping to contend for a Super Bowl this season. The team made few changes in the offseason, but the moves were significant. Cliff Avril should bolster a middling pass rush. Percy Harvin, acquired in a splashy trade with the Minnesota Vikings, also figures to be a difference maker, assuming he actually sees the field this season.
The Chargers seemingly have a longer way to go to an NFL championship after going 7-9 last season, but they are still arguably one of the league's most talented groups of underachievers. This offseason, they addressed their biggest needs through the 2013 NFL Draft, acquiring offensive guard D.J. Fluker, linebacker Manti Te'o and wide receiver Keenan Allen, all of who are expected to make an impact as rookies. All three should be on display Thursday.
