49ers sign Eric Wright to 1-year deal

USA TODAY Sports

Eric Wright is a member of the San Francisco 49ers, FINALLY.

Eric Wright will finally join the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced Thursday. Wright signed a one-year contract, and was immediately placed on the Niners' non-football injury/illness list.

The 49ers agreed to a trade for the cornerback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the start of training camp, but the trade was voided when Wright failed his physical. He was subsequently released by the Bucs. As of last Sunday, Wright was still not considered healthy enough to sign with the team.

The 49ers reentered the market for secondary help after losing Chris Culliver to a torn ACL last week. Wright was still available, perhaps due to concerns about his health and conditioning. He struggled with an Achilles injury last season, though it's unclear whether he is still suffering from the ailment.

General manager Trevor Baalke said that Wright will join the 49ers after dealing with "a personal matter." Wright can be recalled from the non-football injury/illness list at any point prior to the final cuts of training camp. He currently counts against the team's 90-man roster, prompting the 49ers to release undrafted rookie free agent cornerback Lowell Rose.
