NFL news: Plaxico Burress is injured, Thursday preseason results

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport

Plaxico Burress has torn his rotator cuff. Meanwhile, six preseason games took place on Thursday, including a blowout and a late-game surge from an unlikely figure.

Plaxico Burress' comeback could be over before it ever really started. A report from ESPN's Adam Schefter late Thursday indicates that the Pittsburgh Steelers' wide receiver has torn his rotator cuff, and could miss the 2013 season. It's an unfortunate situation for a player who was making waves early in Steelers' camp.

Ravens beat Buccaneers, 44-16

Joe Flacco and Josh Freeman are in very different places. The former was recently awarded with a huge new contract, while Freeman is hoping he can prove to Tampa Bay's front office that he can be relied on long-term. Both quarterbacks struggled on Thursday in their own way, but the dominant Ravens' defense was too much for the Buccaneers, as Baltimore cruised to an easy victory.

Pat White rescues the Redskins

It's the kind of story NFL preseason is made of. Only in August could the Redskins' Pat White be out of football for three years, come back in the preseason, and find a way to lead his ragtag group of 4th-string players to victory over the Bengals. While his passing wasn't perfect, he made plays in the crunch time -- and that's what really matters.

Blaine Gabbert is in, Maurice Jones-Drew is out

The quarterback competition in Jacksonville isn't over, but round one goes to Blaine Gabbert, who will start for the Jaguars in Friday's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. It might be hard to really evaluate Gabbert's play without a reliable running game, and Maurice Jones-Drew will not play, as the running back continued to rehabilitate from a Lisfranc injury.
