Manti Te'o injury: Chargers rookie avoids injured reserve

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

There's no update on Manti Te'o's foot injury, but Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said the rookie isn't a candidate for the injured reserve.

Manti Te'o was initially expected to be a starting linebacker for the San Diego Chargers. Now it seems he's just lucky a lingering foot injury won't cause him to be placed on the injured reserve.

Te'o injured his foot in the Chargers' first preseason game after just nine snaps and hasn't stepped on the field since. He was scratched for the team's season-opener on Monday night. Head coach Mike McCoy didn't elaborate much on Te'o's injury during Tuesday's press conference, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune, but he did say that the rookie linebacker isn't a candidate for the injured reserve.

Te'o, the 2012 Heisman Trophy runner-up and a consensus All-American at Notre Dame, was selected with the 38th pick of this year's NFL Draft. He'll likely undergo quite a bit of scrutiny due to the girlfriend hoax that plagued the end of his college career, but his primary concern at the time is overcoming the foot injury and getting on the football field.
