The Detroit Lions are reportedly pursuing a trade to acquire a wide receiver to replace the injured Nate Burleson, according to Lions beat writer Tim Twentyman. The Lions lost Burleson early Tuesday morning after the wideout broke his arm in a car accident while driving home from watching Monday Night Football at a teammate's home. He reportedly ran into a median after being distracted by a falling piece of pizza.
The Lions have been searching for another wideout since the offseason. With Burleson out, depth behind Calvin Johnson has become critical. Projected No. 2 receiver Ryan Broyles played Sunday for the first time since tearing his ACL last December. Behind Broyles, the Lions are waiting for second-year wideout Patrick Edwards to fully recover from an ankle injury to give the offense a viable number of passing targets.
Two intriguing trade options include Josh Gordon and Greg Little on a Cleveland Browns squad that seems all too eager to stockpile draft picks at the moment. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that both players were being shopped around the league, though Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski explicitly denied the report Monday. In late August, Schefter also mentioned Chicago Bears wideout Earl Bennett as a potential trade target.
Several intriguing names are also waiting to be picked up on the free agent market if the Lions opt to go that route. Brandon Lloyd is coming off a very productive season with the New England Patriots, though he has already reportedly turned down several NFL offers to pursue an acting career. Devery Henderson and Braylon Edwards made names for themselves due to their physical gifts, though the fact that both players were left to pasture by the Washington Redskins and New York Jets, respectively, may not speak well of their current ability.
The Lions have had constant trouble with their wide receiver corps the last few years (outside of Johnson, of course). The team traded a fifth-round pick for Mike Thomas last season, only to release him less than one year later. Titus Young was a budding star early in his career, but then he had several bizarre on-field and off-field incidents that have since put his life on hold.
