Cowboys vs. Chargers 2013 game preview: Will San Diego rebound at home against Dallas?

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The inter-conference battle between the Cowboys and Chargers will take place in Week 4 in San Diego.

The Chargers will host the Cowboys in Week 4. San Diego is coming off a last-minute loss to the Titans and are looking to rebound against an impressive Dallas team that has been red-hot on offense. The Chargers have been able to move the ball well on offense but have struggled to keep the score close with a porous defense.

On the other sideline, the Cowboys have been pretty balanced on offense and defense this season. Dallas is coming off a dominating 31-7 victory against the Rams and their new Tampa 2 defense seems to be moving forward and progressing. The Cowboys will need to have a complete performance on Sunday to beat the Bolts.

Meet the Chargers

The Chargers have been extremely effective on offense with a revitalized Philip Rivers at quarterback and the re-emergence of wide receivers Eddie Royal and Vincent Brown. The offense under new head coach Mike McCoy and new offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt has been able to move the ball with relative ease but has needed those points because of their defense's poor play. The Chargers' secondary has had trouble in coverage, while the linebackers have had their struggles with injuries.

Meet the Cowboys

Dallas is 2-1 following a blowout win over the Rams in Week 3. While they have found several ways to score, the connection between quarterback Tony Romo and wide receiver Dez Bryant has been absolutely dangerous. While the passing game has been the prominent factor in wins this season, running back DeMarco Murray has also be impressive in the ground game. On top of the offensive triumphs, the defensive's transition to the Tampa 2 has gone very well so far this season.

Local Takes: Chargers

Superduperboltman of Bolts From The Blue believes the Cowboys will be a tough task for San Diego:

This year, the Cowboys have a solid defense and numerous offensive weapons. Since the Chargers have both a crappy run defense and porous coverage unit, expect Dallas to move the ball at will come Sunday. Pass rushers Demarcus Ware should have a field day, as should Jason Hatcher, facing a patchwork offensive line. I don't see this game going very well for San Diego. Even if some key defenders come back, neither Derek Cox nor Shareece Wright nor three Marcus Gilchrists can cover Dez Bryant. Or Jason Witten. I would love it, however, if by the final whistle both teams are .500.

Local Takes: Cowboys

Tom Ryle of Blogging the Boys believes the Cowboys can put up points against the Chargers' weak secondary:

If there is a unit that should be exploited by the Cowboys, particularly by Tony Romo and his receivers, it is the secondary, which is pretty much a hot mess for San Diego. Everyone points to safety Eric Weddle as the best player they have back there, but his grade certainly does not indicate it, with Jahleel Addae and Marcus Gilchrist both having better numbers - but all are in negative territory. And the cornerbacks look worse.

Defensively, the Chargers are simply not good. They are next to last in total yards allowed per game at 470.7, dead last in passing yards, are giving up 130.0 yards on the ground, and 27.0 points per game. The only strength defensively appears to be the edge rushers, so Bill Callahan should be going right up the middle with both the run and the pass.

Prediction

From Week 4 Picks:

The Cowboys look marginally competent this season, but a beatdown of the Rams only gets a team so much credit. The same can probably be said about the Chargers. This is a good chance for Dallas to put another game between itself and the rest of the NFC East. That could come in handy later in the year.

The pick: Cowboys

Odds

The Cowboys are listed as 1.5-point favorites on the road against the Chargers, according to Odds Shark.

Next Week

In Week 5, the Chargers will travel to the Raiders. The Cowboys will host the Broncos following their matchup against San Diego.
