Ravens vs. Broncos in weather delay

The 2013 season started with a thud as bad weather delayed kickoff between the Broncos and the Ravens on Thursday night.

The kickoff to the 2013 NFL season between the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos has been delayed until 7:10 p.m. in Denver (9:10 p.m. ET) due to lightning in the area.

The league informed both teams that officials were awaiting word from the NFL office in New York on how to proceed. The situation has been fluid, as the kickoff was initially moved back to 6:55 p.m. locally, then to 7:05 p.m. before the latest update.

A warning was displayed to fans inside the arena:

"Skyview Weather Service has informed us of severe lightning activity in the Denver area. If you feel the need, take cover in a sheltered area. If necessary, public address announcements will be made with further instructions."

The green stuff in the radar picture below is bad weather heading towards Denver:

After an intro inside Mile High featuring a "Final Countdown" of NFL greats counting down towards kickoff, fans and viewers were promptly notified that the start of the game would be delayed until the weather cleared. Shots on the NBC telecast showed fans prepping for the rain under plastic parkas.

The Ravens are no strangers to delays. They overcame a long blackout that delayed the Super Bowl last February to defeat the San Francisco 49ers.
