The Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers get the 2013 regular season underway with an intriguing matchup. The Seahawks couldn't have more hype coming in, with most folks picking them to either make it to or win the Super Bowl. Carolina enters with a playoff berth as the goal following a 7-9 campaign in 2012.
The Panthers hopes will largely ride on the maturation of quarterback Cam Newton. While all the physical tools are clearly there, some have questioned the leadership ability of the ex-Heisman winner. Defensively, things are starting to come together for Carolina behind last year's first round pick, Luke Kuechly, who led the NFL in tackles. Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson are also excellent at the defensive ends.
Seattle has one of the deepest rosters in the league, headlined by Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch on offense, and Richard Sherman on defense. The Seahawks have a big, punishing unit led by Sherman in the secondary along with Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Brandon Browner. Up front, the combination of Cliff Avril and Bruce Irvin can prove to be devastating at times.
