Lions coaching rumors: Lovie Smith a target for the job

The Detroit Lions are reportedly targeting Lovie Smith in their head coaching search.

The Detroit Lions are interested in interviewing former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith for the position left vacant after Jim Schwartz was fired, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. The team made the decision to fire Schwartz shortly after the end of the regular season, and they've been linked to several head coaching candidates thus far.

Smith has already been mentioned in connection to the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so he's certainly a hot commodity at this point. It would be surprising to see Smith go through the offseason without landing somewhere as a head coach.

The Lions believe that they are in need of a strong leader, and they are likely looking for someone who's been there before as opposed to hiring a rookie head coach. Smith was the coach of the Bears for nine seasons, and compiled an 81-63 record over that time. He led the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006, where they lost to the Indianapolis Colts.

Detroit has also been linked to Jim Caldwell, current offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens and former head coach of the aforementioned Colts. Some reports have suggested the Lions are interested in Seattle Seahawks assistant Tom Cable as well, though other reports say that's not true.
